BC Seniors Games in Richmond - Call for Communications Volunteers!

16 Sep 2009 00:00

The B.C. Seniors Games are in Richmond, B.C. on September 16-19, 2009 – a date that’s coming up fast!

To our fellow Amateur Radio enthusiasts.

We currently have roughly four thousand athletes registered to compete, and over eight hundred friends and neighbours from around the province volunteering to help with the games. Athlete registrations are now complete and we need a few hundred more volunteers to help with everything from communications to transportation.

This is a fun event and I encourage all Amateurs to participate as volunteers with the Communications directorate. We will be handling communications for transportation, providing drivers for some of the vehicles, traffic handling results out from events when need be, and helping to coordinate everything from judging to handing out medals. Plus, of course the usual traffic and emergency handling for which we are well known for.

There are 29 sports in all including softball, soccer, track and field, curling, golf, table tennis, badminton, horseshoes, cribbage,

darts, square dancing, and many more. Athletes must be 55 years of age or older and qualify for teams representing 13 B.C.

regions. The events are held all over Richmond including at the Olympic Oval. Communications is very important for this event.

We will be using a combination of cell phone, amateur radio, and commercial radios for the games. The commercial radio users do not need to be licensed which means you can sign up your spouse, friends and significant others to come help out!

Volunteering means proper registration, and that must be done ASAP for insurance coverage reasons. See: http://bcseniorsgames2009.ca Click the “Volunteer Registration” menu option on the left hand side of the screen. Or you can call the office at 604-718-8010 and they will take your information.

And drop us a line at comms@bcseniorsgames2009.ca and give us your name, call sign, phone number (cell if you have it) and, most importantly, your e-mail address. We will put you on our automated mailing list so we can keep you informed of developments, events, etc.

Plenty of hotels and we do have some limited RV parking as well. All the information you need is on the website.

So, come make some new friends in Richmond, meet the gang from the Richmond ARC and many other clubs, and have some fun!
